Thanks to ChatGPT and other AI language models, you can create articles and other content types in minutes with just a few keystrokes. These widely available AI copywriting tools have helped businesses scale content marketing at less cost. The new status quo created by these tools has left people asking: will AI replace copywriters?
The truthful answer isn’t that shocking. But before the big reveal, let’s clarify what AI copywriting is and check out the six most popular AI copywriting tools.
What Is AI Copywriting?
AI copywriting involves creating content for your website or other platforms with artificial intelligence solutions. In this context, artificial intelligence (AI) refers to language model systems that can respond to prompts or queries you ask. These AI systems provide answers based on knowledge acquired from reading existing internet content.
If no one has created content that answers your question, AI can’t answer because it’ll have no knowledge about the topic. Also, since AI’s information comes from existing internet content, it can’t provide original answers or ideas.
For example, you can ask ChatGPT-3 to write you a blog post about any topic. You can specify the word count, keywords, and other parameters. The AI platform will provide your blog post based on the information it has gleaned from the internet. At the time this post was published, ChatGPT-3 only had knowledge from internet content published before September 2021.
The 6 Best AI Copywriting Tools
I’ve experimented with various AI copywriters. I did it because, for the past four years, doomsayers and alarmists have promised AI will take my job. So, I decided to scope out my competition. Here are six AI copywriting tools I’ve fiddled with and found the most impressive.
1. ChatGPT
Rating: 4.7 out of 5 stars on G2
ChatGPT is the granddaddy of AI copywriters. In fact, many of the other AI copywriting tools are powered by ChatGPT. Since its launch in 2022, it’s grown in popularity with many people abandoning Google for it as their preferred search engine.
You can use ChatGPT-3.5 as a free AI copywriting tool if you enter the right prompts. The prompt should specify the answers you want, the tone and style the article should possess, and more to ensure response accuracy.
However, if you read the fine print at the bottom of the above image, you’ll see that ChatGPT-3.5 warns that it makes mistakes. As such, you have to crosscheck whatever it writes to ensure it’s not false or inaccurate. Some of the biggest inaccuracy complaints regarding ChatGPT include falsifying sources, messing up simple math, and slotting in fake news or biased information.
If you’re willing to pay $20 monthly, you can upgrade to ChatGPT-4, which provides better answers, thanks to its more recently updated database. GPT-4 can even provide images alongside text if you use it for copywriting. All else aside, ChatGPT’s biggest selling point is its mobile and desktop versions are super easy to use.
2. Jasper
Rating: 4.7 out of 5 stars on G2
Jasper wants to make all your copywriting problems go away by doing all your writing for you. It’s powered by ChatGPT and other AI models such as Claude and Gemini, making it more creative and powerful. It’s easy to use, especially since it has several built-in templates you can customize to craft your desired content.
However, Jasper costs more than most AI copywriting tools, with the cheapest plan costing $40 monthly. Other cons include users complaining about inaccuracies, plagiarism, and published content getting unindexed by search engines. These issues meant I had to spend considerable time proofreading, editing, and sometimes rewriting Jasper-written articles. But don’t take my word for it. Check out what real users on Reddit had to say about Jasper.
3. Writesonic
Rating: 4.7 out of 5 stars on G2
Writesonic promises to be your end-to-end copywriting solution, handling everything from topic ideation and content creation to search engine optimization. I’ve tested the AI copywriter, and yes, it does deliver on its promises. However, while a layman may think Writesonic does a great job, information accuracy issues are rife.
Other Reddit users had this to say about the AI copywriting tool:
My experience was identical. Writesonic will do what it says, but there are no quality guarantees. You have to crosscheck everything yourself and edit before using any copy provided by the AI copywriting tool. If you use Writesonic’s outputs without touching them up, your website will likely fail Google’s quality test.
4. Hypotenuse AI
Rating: 4.4 out of 5 stars on G2
The coolest thing about Hypotenuse AI is that, unlike ChatGPT-3.5 and other competitors, it scours the internet for the latest information to boost content relevance. It also has an inbuilt plagiarism checker that reduces your likelihood of getting slammed with a copyright infringement lawsuit.
But a plagiarism checker doesn’t mean you’ll get copywriting with original ideas. After all, Hypotenuse AI crafts content based on information gathered from the internet. This is a big issue because Google adores originality and snubs Frankenstein content pieced together from content from other sites.
Also, this AI copywriting software has a fairly steep learning curve and few customization options. These shortcomings can leave first-time users fumbling for a while before they can experience value with the tool.
5. Rytr
Rating: 4.7 out of 5 stars on G2
Rytr is available as a free AI copywriting tool that can write 10,000 characters monthly or a paid tool that provides unlimited words. Simplicity and user-friendliness are its most attractive traits. But once again, the outputs need lots of fact-checking and proofreading.
Also, the AI writer has a tendency to spew out technical jargon and complicated sentences that negatively impact readability. Poor readability frustrates user engagement, leading to a high bounce rate. Even if your article initially ranked high in SERPs, its ranking will eventually crash if Google notices rising bounce rates.
6. Copy.ai
Rating: 4.7 out of 5 stars on G2
Since Copy.ai is one of the older AI copywriting tools, it’s had time to iron out kinks and improve. With the software, you can get new content ideas and scale your blog copywriting with less effort.
However, you need to be watchful with this AI writer. Depending on the topic, Copy.ai may spew weird and highly random content nowhere near what you asked for. This mostly occurs when you ask for long-form copy about not-so-popular topics. You can’t risk skipping fact-checking and proofreading deliverables provided by this AI copywriting tool.
Honorable Mentions

Compared to other tools, our picks responded to prompts with better-quality content and required less editing. Other AI copywriting software that came close but were less impressive include:
Will AI Replace Writers?
No, AI will not replace copywriters for many more years to come. Today’s best AI copywriting tools can streamline blog content creation. But they can’t replace or even compete with top and mid-level copywriters when it comes to content quality. This is because even the most advanced AI copywriting software lacks the human touch. That human element is what makes copywriting relatable and compelling.
For example, AI can’t understand or relate to user pain points. It’s a machine. As such, it can’t write to engage and compel a reader by sympathizing with their pains or needs. It just copies what other writers have done and crafts content along the same lines – No originality and zero initiative.
Other reasons why AI copywriting tools are nowhere close to replacing me and other professional human copywriters are:
- Adaptability and Flexibility: Human copywriters can quickly adapt their writing to match changes in user sentiment or preferences, Google requirements, current events, and more. AI can’t do this, making it less effective for creating consistently relevant content.
- Understanding Nuances and Context: Clients may have tonal, style, and writing angle preferences. AI can’t grasp such subtle nuances. Human copywriters, on the other hand, can grasp complex ideas and implement client preferences. These writers will then apply such details to create high-performing content that resonates with readers.
- Creativity: AI doesn’t create. It duplicates and generates content based on existing data and patterns. Human copywriters, on the other hand, can think outside the box and come up with original ideas to set clients apart from competitors. Originality and creativity are also essential for snagging readers’ attention because novel ideas are hard to ignore.
- Quality Control and Editing: AI writing tools typically spew long, hard-to-read sentences. You can minimize this with the right prompts, but the final output still requires human editing and proofreading. Then there’s the issue of AI copywriters repeating points, inserting inaccurate information, and providing false sources in writings. The only way to catch such hiccups is to assign editorial oversight to a human.
Let’s not forget Google, which is currently arguably the biggest reason why the best AI copywriting tools can’t replace human copywriters. In a nutshell, Google isn’t a fan of AI content, primarily because it doesn’t consider such content as original or authoritative. Evidence already shows that relying solely on AI content to boost your website’s visibility and traffic can generate horrendous results.
Does Google Penalize AI Content?
Yes, Google is penalizing AI content. Some people will tell you no, but the evidence strongly indicates otherwise. Take for example the experience of Ron Lieback, who advised a client against scaling blog content creation with AI writing tools. The client didn’t listen, and disaster ensued.
Other respectable SEO leaders have also researched and shown the damaging results of carelessly scaling with AI content. Penalties vary from pages getting unindexed to high-ranking websites no longer appearing in search results. Here’s a screenshot of SEO specialist – Susan Beckingham’s findings:
Just so we’re clear, Google isn’t penalizing sites for simply using AI writers. The search engine penalizes websites for using AI copywriters to mass-produce content. In most cases, this content doesn’t offer value or solve problems. It’s basically spamming the search engine with the sole goal of ranking in SERPs. Google hates this because its mission is to provide users with the best answers to search queries in SERPs.
Spammy AI-generated content gets in the way of this. So, Google cuts the head of the snake by removing the offending content and web pages from its index. Unindexed pages can’t appear in search results, making room for genuine content that provides searchers value.
How Does Google Detect AI Content?
Google AI content detection involves checking for various signals that indicate AI writing. These signals include language patterns, content quality, and plagiarism.
- Language Patterns: AI copywriters typically follow the same language/writing patterns, leading to content having structural similarities. Google watches for such writing similarities to identify AI-written content. The pattern may include repeated use of certain words and syntax structure.
- Content Quality: Google looks at content’s coherence, relevance, and accuracy to determine if it’s AI-generated. Most AI copywriting only provides surface information, lacking in-depth, actionable knowledge that will benefit the reader.
- Plagiarism: As we’ve stated, AI copywriters generate content based on information gathered from reading the content of others. Google watches for copied content and lack of originality to determine if humans or AI wrote a piece.
Google watches for these signals and other red flags with the help of sophisticated algorithms. The search engine also has a team of humans trained to review suspicious content manually.
So, Who Should Do Your Copywriting?
Choosing R2-D2 and C-3PO to handle your entire copywriting isn’t the way to go if you want sound results. You are better off working with a human copywriter with experience writing about your niche and delivering your desired results. Not trying to brag, but I fit that bill to a T, and it’s not just because my name’s Tobi Moyela. Just check out my portfolio to see the amazing results I’ve given clients.
Professional copywriters like myself take the time to understand a client’s target audience and content marketing goals. With these details, I can start keyword research to ideate topics and create content that will resonate with your audience and compel them to take your desired actions.
For example, do you want to educate people and establish yourself as an authority within your field? If so, I’ll do keyword research to ideate informational topics and write content that answers the questions your target audience searches for.
Or, do you want to attract more traffic and generate quality leads? For that, I’ll do keyword research to identify commercial and transactional search queries. I’ll then craft content that matches searcher intent and establishes your brand or product as the best choice to satisfy readers’ needs.
